The Great Delhi Durbar of December 1911 was a grand & most elaborate arrangement to showcase the British Empire’s might in India and its right to don the ‘Imperial’ tag by demolishing the Mughal myth.
And for Delhi, 12th December 1911 proved to be a very historic day: the King-Emperor George V announced, to the surprise of all present in the Coronation Durbar, that the capital of British India would be shifted from Calcutta to Delhi.
From the dusty, scattered villages, in and around areas of the Raisena and Malcha hills, the bazaars of Madhoganj and hamlets of Jaisinghpura and Khairpur, and from the ruins of erstwhile imperial capitals and royal burial grounds that lay to the South east of Moghul Delhi, arose the Grand New City, dreamt and executed, to almost near perfection, by the chief planners Lutyens and Baker!
Thus began the saga of New Delhi’s creation and it’s this period of almost 3 decades starting from 1905, which saw many a controversy, failures, hardships and finally the grand successes and inauguration of the newest city in Delhi, New Delhi in 1931.
Come join the band of history lovers, photographers & writers of DBF, on that same date of 12th Dec, this 110th Anniversary of that day when “New Delhi” came into being.
HIGHLIGHTS: This heritage walk covers one of New Delhi’s iconic market spots, Connaught Place, a few iconic roads which were crucial to the city plan, architectural highlights and the crowning glory of the Viceroy’s house, the Rashtrapati Bhawan, a few iconic landmarks of the Delhi we know today and obviously stories of how New Delhi was planned, executed, all powered by a quick Dilli-walla kind of nashtaa (breakfast)!
Walk presentation will be done in British English! LOL! And also in mix of Hindi/Urdu too.
